Ivo Pilar Institute of Social Sciences is a public research institute founded in 1991. It`s areas and fields of scientific research are: a) social sciences (psychology, sociology, demography, education and rehabilitation sciences, political sciences, economics, information and communication sciences), b) humanities (history, theology, philosophy, ethnology and anthropology, religion science, philology) and c) interdisciplinary scientific areas (cognitive sciences, geography, gender studies) Institute`s head office is in Zagreb, but the Institute also has 8 regional centres (Osijek, Pula, Split, Vukovar, Gospić, Dubrovnik, Varaždin and Vis). There are approximately 90 researchers working at the Institute (60 senior researchers and 30 early stage researchers and assistants).
Ivo Pilar Institute has participated in about 350 research projects, including 60 international projects, and had collaboration within H2020, FP7 and Erasmus framework, and other institutions such as UNICEF, the ERSTE Foundation and the Open Society Foundation. Nationally, besides scientific projects of the Ministry of Science, the Institute has collaborated with the Croatian Science Foundation, Adris Foundation, Croatian Chamber of Commerce, Tourist Boards of different cities, counties and municipalities, HEP Group (national electricity company), Croatian Heritage Foundation, as well as government offices and various associations.
Since 2000, on average, 20-30 research projects are being conducted at the Institute (with approximately 20 active COST Actions in which our researchers take part). Since its foundation, the Institute has published more than 90 books. As part of the Institute`s publishing activities 150 issues of “Društvena istraživanja” (“Journal for General Social Issues”) – an interdisciplinary scientific journal has been published since 1992. Other scientific journals – “Pilar – Journal for Social and Humanistic Studies” as well as “Histria Antiqua” have been published since 2006. Since its foundation, the Institute has organized approximately 50 national and approximately 40 international events (symposiums, conferences and congresses) and approximately 120 panel discussions and round tables.
