Topic 1: Distance learning

The introduction of DAD “Distance Learning” following the Covid 19 health emergency, on the one hand broke down resistance to technological learning tools, however, on the other hand, it highlighted the importance of appropriate and inclusive instructional design for all levels of schooling

If we analyze how the problem of inclusion has been addressed especially for SEN “Special Educational Needs” and disabled pupils, all the European Countries made available teaching aids designed to facilitate the use of appropriate technologies and teaching aids for inclusive teaching and effective for pupils with disabilities as well.

Several studies show that effective inclusion depends on:

  • technologies
  • relationships with families
  • the collaboration among teachers
  • the strategies adopted in online teaching

Teachers had to create customized activities through synchronous and asynchronous lesson modes for students, to be carried out either in small groups or individually.

  • While distance learning has expressed the potential of online technologies, it has also increased all forms of inequality caused by the digital divide.
  • Many families have faced the problem of limited availability of digital devices and adequate and fast connection.
  • Parents of students with special needs have experienced considerable difficulty in supporting their children’s online learning.

How to foster inclusive education of students with special needs or difficulties?

  1. Device availability and connectivity for both teachers and families.
  2. Support educators step by step in the use of specific software, platforms and applications.
  3. Support families step by step by also thinking about free courses of preparation.
  4. Support children with special needs and their families in dealing with specific challenges of distance learning.
