“…is my child ready to listen, to learn, to understand?”
What is the first step to tuning in when our child has difficulty controlling himself/herself or making good decisions?
Because if we do not merely react to the child’s overt behavior, but we tune in to their inner distress, we allow them to move from a reactive state to a receptive state.
Parents should represent a safe base from which the child can move away to explore, knowing that they can be cared for when needed and can return to that same base at any time.
Parent-child attunement is also essential to help children develop the emotional regulation skills that are essential for their psychological well-being.
